Excimer Laser
Advanced technology for refractive procedures
What exactly do we mean by the term “excimer”?
The term “excimer” comes from the words excited dimer and refers to a dimeric chemical compound in a high – energy state. The breakdown of this unstable dimeric molecule is accompanied by the emission of high – energy photons in the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum.
What is the role of excimer laser technology in refractive procedures?
The philosophy of laser refractive procedures is based on the idea that altering the shape and curvature of the cornea can change the eye’s refractive power – state. By using the excimer laser, corneal tissue is photoablated to a predetermined depth that is precisely defined preoperatively.
An excimer laser is an advanced medical equipment system, capable of sculpting – vaporizing the corneal tissue (breaking down its molecules and expelling them into the surrounding space), thus changing its shape and curvature. The result of this process is that light rays are properly focused onto the retina, allowing for accurate decoding of visual stimuli, so as for the candidate to have improved vision after the surgical procedure.
An excimer laser system features advanced software based on complex algorithms for designing refractive correction profiles (flying spot technology). According to preoperative topographic maps with color scales, the excimer laser beam is programmed to correct refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism).
Eye – tracking technology in excimer lasers
A state-of-the-art excimer laser system is equipped with eye-tracker technology. Eye – tracking principle involves precise and accurate monitoring of the eye’s micro – movements in various dimensions (similar to a radar with the optical axis at the center of the pupil as a reference point), allowing for rapid synchronization and precise guidance of the excimer laser beam. This ensures excellent refractive outcomes even for nervous or anxious patients who may move their eyes during the laser refractive procedure.
