Femto – LASIK Method
Procedure without any scalpel or knife (all laser)
What exactly is the Femto LASIK method?
Femto – LASIK method (Femtosecond Laser in Situ Keratomileusis), also known as intrastromal keratomileusis with the application of femtosecond laser technology, has been used with great success in recent years for laser refractive procedures to correct common refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism).
Femto – LASIK technique in fact has effectively replaced the traditional LASIK, where surgeons used a mechanical microkeratome (keratome) with a blade or knife, offering tremendous levels of safety, precision, speed, and reliability because all incisions are made using laser technology (all – laser procedure).
What are the main steps of femto – LASIK method in laser refractive procedures?
In Femto – LASIK method, a corneal flap (skin – membrane) is created on the surface of the cornea using femtosecond laser technology (instead of a knife or blade as in traditional LASIK), which remains connected to the rest of the cornea by a hinge – like structure. The corneal flap is then lifted with a special surgical instrument, and then excimer laser (a laser that vaporizes tissue) is applied to the corneal stroma so as for the sculpting to be achieved (reshape of the cornea). Afterward, the flap is repositioned to its original initial place, completing the procedure.
Because Femto – LASIK method uses two lasers (femtosecond laser and excimer laser), it is also well known as all – laser LASIK (all actions are performed with laser technology, highlighting the increased intra-operative safety).
What are the major advantages of femto – LASIK method?
Nowadays, millions of laser refractive procedures are performed using Femto – LASIK method using femtosecond laser technology. The introduction of Femto – LASIK has revolutionized the field of laser correction for myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. The major advantages of Femto – LASIK method include the following:

Precise prediction of the thickness and shape of corneal flap

Exceptional safety and comfort with significantly reduced intraoperative and postoperative complications, since no blade or knife is used, as in traditional LASIK with the use of a mechanical microkeratome

Immediate visual recovery and rapid return to daily hobbies and activities

High reliability and accurate forecast of the refractive outcome

High effectiveness, even in challenging cases of high difficulty (high diopters, severe hyperopia, irregular astigmatism)

Minimization of postoperative dry eye syndrome symptoms
