Blepharitis

Α persistent inflammatory condition

What exactly is blepharitis?

Blepharitis is a persistent inflammatory condition, affecting the eyelids and the edges of the eyelids. This condition causes the eyelids to appear red and swollen. A type of crust forms clings to the base of the eyelashes. The condition is more common in individuals with oily skin, dandruff, or dry eye syndrome.

What are the causes of blepharitis?

The causes of blepharitis vary. Excessive bacterial activity can play a significant role, as can a range of problems with the meibomian glands in our eyelids. Additionally, patients with skin conditions like seborrheic dermatitis and rosacea may also develop blepharitis.

What are the types of blepharitis?

There are 2 main types of blepharitis:

Anterior blepharitis: Characterized by the presence of yellow flakes at the base of the eyelashes and it often occurs in patients with oily skin

Posterior blepharitis: Caused by the blockage of the meibomian glands at the base of the eyelashes

What are the main symptoms of blepharitis?

Symptoms include:

Irritation and symptoms of dry eyes

Itching (pruritus)

Crusting (cymbals) at the base of the eyelashes, especially in the morning hours

Lacrimation

Redness (flushing)

Sensation of a foreign body (feeling like a speck is in the eye)

Burning sensation (tingling)

Loss of eyelashes

What factors worsen blepharitis?

Blepharitis tends to worsen in weather conditions with low temperatures (cold), in environment with continuous air conditioning, in sleep deprivation, in prolonged computer use, and with long – term contact lens wearing. Additionally, it can be exacerbated by the parallel presence of a skin condition e.g. rosacea or seborrheic dermatitis.

How can blepharitis be treated?

The key element that must be detected in treating blepharitis is identifying the exact cause of the problem. Depending on the stage of the condition and the precise cause, the following treatment solutions or their mixed combinations are recommended:

Skin and eyelid hygiene

Warm compresses

Medication with specific antibiotics

Treatment with artificial (synthetic) tears

IPL technique (Intense Pulsed Light)

Ophthalmic
