Hyposphagma

When a small blood vessel in the conjunctiva ruptures and bleeds

What exactly is hyposphagma and when does it occur?

Hyposphagma in fact occurs when a small blood vessel in the conjunctiva bleeds (ruptures). The blood is visible because the bulbar conjunctiva is transparent. It appears similar to a bruise and is aesthetically repellent – repulsive, but fortunately, it is harmless and does not require treatment.

What are the main causes of hyposphagma?

Hyposphagma can result from the following:

Intense coughing

After vomiting

After vigorous physical exercise

Via lifting heavy weights

Is there any reason to treat hyposphagma?

Hyposphagma does not require treatment or medication as it is harmless to vision. The only thing needed is patience and allowing time for it to be absorbed. It usually disappears within a few weeks. If frequent recurrences are observed, a cardiological and hematological evaluation is recommended by the medical doctor.

In some cases, it can be associated with postoperative bleeding stain or related to ocular trauma. Diabetic and hypertensive patients, as well as those taking anticoagulant medications, are more likely to experience it.
