PTK Method
Phototherapeutic Keratectomy
What exactly is the PTK (Photo Therapeutic Keratectomy) method?
PTK method, also known to the general public as phototherapeutic keratectomy, is a surgical laser technique that uses excimer laser technology for the treatment and restoration of various conditions, injuries, scars, or opacities of the corneal layer tissue, aiming to improve vision.
PTK technique requires thorough preoperative evaluation to assess and determine the extent and depth of the damage. It is performed under local anesthesia (anesthetic drops). Postoperatively, a therapeutic contact lens is used on the eye for a few days until the regeneration and reshaping of the cornea’s anterior membrane, called the epithelium, is complete.
It should be clarified that PTK method is a phototherapeutic technique (applied purely for therapeutic purposes) and not a refractive method, as the excimer laser is used here to smooth out various corneal surface abnormalities rather than to correct known refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism).
What are the contemporary applications of the PTK method?
PTK method is currently used in the following situations:

Treatment of superficial corneal opacities or scars

Restoration of corneal injuries

Treatment of certain corneal infections

Corneal pathologies, e.g. band keratopathy

Recurrent epithelial erosions

Corneal dystrophies

Keratitis
