Ptosis (Droopy Eyelid)
When the upper eyelid droops or falls over the eye
What exactly is ptosis (droopy eyelid)?
Ptosis (droopy eyelid) refers to the condition where the upper eyelid droops or falls over the eye. Ptosis can occur in one or both eyes.
What are the primary causes of ptosis (droopy eyelid)?
Ptosis (droopy eyelid) can be congenital (present at birth) or acquired (developing over time). Most common causes of ptosis (droopy eyelid) include eye traumas, infections or inflammations, and age – related muscle problems.
What are the main symptoms of ptosis (droopy eyelid)?
Drooping of the upper eyelid, not only presents an aesthetic issue, but can also negatively affect vision by covering part of the visual field (reduced peripheral vision). A patient attempt to compensate by raising eyebrows, however this leads to eyebrow pain or headache.
How can ptosis (droopy eyelid) be treated?
Mild ptosis that does not affect vision typically does not require treatment. However, for more severe cases, surgical intervention is often the most effective solution, provided the patient is a suitable candidate (overall eye health plays a role). For those who are not suitable candidates for surgical procedure, an alternative is using specialized glasses with supporting frames to keep the eyelids in a position that does not obstruct the visual field.
The main goal of ptosis surgery is to restore the successful restoration (lift) of the normal – aesthetic appearance of the eyelid, taking into consideration the exact symmetry with the adjacent eyelid. The reset of the eyelid also aims to improve vision by removing any obstructions in the eye’s visual field.
During ptosis surgery, an incision is made in the skin of the upper eyelid (or an incision in the inner side of the upper eyelid without visible incision in the skin), where ptosis is observed and there is a tightening of the muscles that lift the eyelid. In some candidates the eyelid muscles may be too weak to lift the eyelid effectively. In those cases a special thread made of artificial material is used to connect – suspend the eyelid to the stronger forehead muscles (a technique known as eyelid suspension to the frontal muscle).
